Common questions
How much does a gable roof cost in the UK?
Most gable roofs range from £5,000 to £12,000 depending on size, pitch, and material. Our cost calculator gives a tailored estimate.
Is this service really free?
Yes. It costs homeowners nothing to request quotes or to use our guides and cost calculator. Roofers can pay to be featured in our directory.
How do I choose a good roofer?
Ask each roofer for proof of public liability insurance, check any trade body membership (such as NFRC), and ask for recent local references. Always compare at least three written quotes before you decide.
How long does gable roof installation take?
A typical residential gable roof takes 5 to 10 working days, weather permitting, from strip-out to final inspection.
Do I need planning permission for a new gable roof?
A like-for-like replacement usually does not need planning permission. Changes to the roof shape or height, or adding dormers or extensions, often do. Check with your local council before starting any significant structural change.
How long does a gable roof last?
It depends on the material. Concrete tiles typically last 40 to 60 years, composite tiles around 50 years, metal sheet 40 to 70 years, and natural slate 80 to 100 years or more.
Which roofing material is best for a gable roof?
Concrete tile is the most common UK choice because it balances cost and performance. Natural slate costs more upfront but lasts much longer, so it often works out cheaper per year of use. Metal sheet and composite tiles are also worth pricing up.
Is a gable roof cheaper than a hip roof?
Generally yes. A gable roof is simpler to frame, which typically makes it around 10 to 15 percent less expensive than a hip roof of comparable size and material.
